Hi Everyone,
The opening reception for Scribble box will take place this Thursday, July 2nd at Bombhouse Gallery. Please find attached the E-Vite for the show. We're really looking forward to the night, with 80 artists participating and such wide variety of work its going to be a really interesting show. The opening will be from 6-9 with the after party at the Button Factory. So bring a few drinks and friends and come see what 83 artists' responses to 32 cryptic clues looks like!

Hullo there Tinderboxers
Following the flurry of Scribblebox activity, I would like to suggest another little project for you all. YES, ALL OF YOU!

Please submit a banner design/image/illustration/text piece for the Tinderbox identity. This piece will be used for this blog, the facebook page and some printed material.

This project will be on-going. You can submit as many pieces as you like. It would be great if we could change it regularly to keep it interesting. (I pinched the idea from creativeireland.com)

Don't be shy. Express yourself, your style, your opinions, anything at all as long as it's your original work.

The dimensions of the blog banner should be about 11 x 3 cm (ish) at 72 dpi. but you can submit anything and we can work around it. If you have no means to scan / photograph your piece, contact me and we'll sort something out. You can post the stuff directly onto the blog or email them to us tinderboxnetwork (at) gmail.com

I look forward to seeing some of your stuff.

Books, Comics and Zines

Summer Edition 2009, the first event of its kind in Dublin, is a day long fair where over 30 exhibitors from across the spectrum of artist's books, comics and zines will get together to showcase their work. With selections ranging from minicomic artists and burgeoning cartoonists to established artists' book practitioners, from poets to printmakers, and from lowbrow artists to zine scribblers, there's something for everyone. Prices range from €1 to €100. Peruse the stalls, take part in a workshop, pick up some handcrafted goodies and let the books blow your mind. This is my Scribble box picture. It's the first time i think iv completed a painting in about 6 years so im pretty happy with myself :) - even if it is tiny. I am envious of how creative the rest of you were with your interpretation of the clue.. im afraid i took the very bookish approach and thought about what the answer to the clue was (thanks Mark for the answer) and then that made me look into geographical drawings and images which lead to the painting. I always loved doing the little diagrams in geography class so it was a bit like being back there..Anyway, I cant wait to see everyones stuff up on a wall and again claire thank you for this.

My Scrible Box Journey (process)

My scribble box piece evolved slowly and with just a sprinkling of frustration.

The clue washed around and around in my mind to the point that I resented even saying it aloud. However, at that point I had a real sense of what I wanted to communicate. I wanted a translation from cryptic to an accessible notion.

Getting deeper: To travel further, to explore beyond the superficial.
On the shore: A destination, a time of reflection.
In the cupboard: Something put away out of sight, but retained.

So the concept is about Memory. As I researched and experimented with medium I realised that Dwelling on memories can drive you mad! While it is wonderful to open the cupboard and dig out old photographs and objects of childhood, you have to be careful not to look back too much. It is reassuring to reminisce but it is best not to visit those memories too regularly.

The character in the illustration has readily made herself vulnerable with nostalgia. I didn't mean for it to be a finger-wagging-Carpe-Diem piece, but there it is. The medium is Indian Ink on Paper. The title is "Getting Deeper on the Shore (Mmomemory)", it was a bit of an accident when I was filling in the Entry form, but i decided to keep it.

Kate Jenkins crochets all kinds of food and some other stuff on her site Cardigan. I've been trying to come up with knitted food puns for ages, the only one i can think of is crocheted potatoes....no?....anyone?

This came about by mistake, hence the title : ) I'm thinking about starting a series of these. Any animal suggestions?

Foodscapes

When you look closely you will see that the landscapes are made up of bacon and other cold cuts. Pictures were photographed by Carl Warner, a photographer who works in London. Each food scene is photographed in layers from foreground to background. Check out the rest of his stuff, I just thought the meaty landscapes were the craziest. It makes me feel hungry, nom nom.....

My Rational for Scribble-Box entry

When I first saw the cryptic clue “Getting deeper on the shore, in the cupboard”, I have to admit, I was a little dumbfounded. “Getting deeper on the shore” to me, sounds like someone is hiding something, something is out of sight. On the other hand “In the cupboard”, completely threw me.

I’m useless at crosswords, so in order to try and understand the clue, I looked up the individual words in my trusty dictionary. It was here I found the phrase ‘cupboard love’, which means “affection shown to someone in order to obtain something”.

This phrase tied in nicely with my previous thoughts of “Getting deeper on the shore”, both seemed to deal with hiding something or holding back.

This made me think of ice-cream kiosks, strange I know, but on a superficial level, they remind me a little of cupboards full of ice-cream. On another level, I always found that these kiosks complement the beach on a sunny day perfectly, they go hand in hand with all my childhood memories of the seaside, and they show affection towards the beach, loving it in the sun, and in turn, they obtain business.

However, when it is raining on the beach, the ice-cream kiosk shuts down its door; it stands alone and apart from the beach, and it is no longer interested in its beauty or in its varied expressions, because nobody is on the beach to buy ice-cream.

The Ice cream kiosk loves the beach in order to gain business from it, and this is why I painted a picture of a shut up ice-cream kiosk in the rain, on the beach, because it hides the truth behind a façade of merriment and adoration; and this to me is “Getting deeper on the shore, in the cupboard”.

Ok, the more I look at this the more it bothers me but I'm just glad I finally finished something and will have something to present. The medium is pencil on gesso primed boards.

“Lost and Hidden”: A Little Note .

Getting deeper on the shore made me think of layers, things that have passed , maybe even things buried on the shore, covered by the sea, lost forever to a different place. In the cupboard, suggested something hidden away. If we walk the shore and search it layers what objects do we wish to find. What can be of no value to one is treasure to another. Its value is hidden to us. So I asked a bunch of people this question if there was one object that you could have back what would it be? All the answers given were really good, so varied and random. What I hoped for was the unexpected and that was the case. You might expect toys to be dominate but not necessarily. The value is the story that comes with the object. The objects were also shared objects not necessarily something belonging to one person but their families. Some objects were strongly connected with places and times and the feelings thus associated. So something lost to them is hidden to us. We can only guess at why exactly that object and its meaning. The answer is never straightforward. The object is only a clue. Such as James’s Christmas decoration the story behind that is not as simple as the viewer might think. Memory interests me, it comes in parts. It is supple, floating, a half dream like state. So an object can make a memory tactile. I ve presented something simple. Line drawings that represent an object called for the person.

Got the following email from Bombhouse yesterday:

Hi Everyone,

So the deadline approaches, Thursday June 18th. We've had an incredible response to the call for entries. The exhibition promises to be a huge event with hopefully over 120 artists showing. We are really hoping to be able to show all the work but unfortunately we can't guarantee it. So finish making your work and get it down to us at :

20 - 25 Aldborough Parade
North Strand Road,
Five Lamps
Dublin 1.

We will be accepting work from 10am - 7pm from June 13th - 18th. Any work submitted after the 18th of June will be subject to a €20 late fee. No work will be accepted after the 22nd of June. Please note that Bombhouse is covered by public liability insurance, it is the responsibility of the artist to insure his/her own work if they wish. For people who have passed on the clue to friends, don't forget to forward this reminder. The opening night for the exhibition will be Thursday July 2nd.

I have a question? please!

Tinderbox members for my Scribble Box piece (which might change but this could help me) Lost things? is there one object or thing or anything that has been lost and you if could have it back what would it be, just one thing, for me for some reason I would love to have one of my grandfather's trilbies, not to be trendy but it reminds of a very specific period of my childhood. an answer to this question would make me happy.
