new work in progress

whoops !!
I meant this post to go on my own blog but it went here ,and well .....it seems a shame to not let it stay :D
(not too much to report) , but I am keeping going with some new drawings , its a good time of year to see a lot of people you wouldnt normally see.
Summer is always busy , I prefer the quieter times and have to remember that I am not an Island (challenging)
B.T.W tinderboxers , the idea for a collective response to song lyrics through drawing is still going to happen .....I am musing it along and will put up a call late aug early sept.
If anyone has any suggestions or whatnot please post them here on the comments :D
stay happy

Melbourne Poster Competition

2010 Brief

"I haven’t failed; I’ve had 10,000 ideas that didn’t work
– Benjamin Franklin
We think Mr. Franklin had a nice way of looking at things. So the 2010 competition theme is ‘A Glass Half Full’.
For those who don’t know, this saying refers to optimism. Some people see situations with optimism (Franklin – glass half full), and some see situations with pessimism (glass half empty).
We would like you to design a positive poster in response to this theme. Judges will be looking for original concepts, lateral thinking and inspired designs. The poster will be up in Melbourne streets, so keep in mind it should also standout against the city landscape."

Prizes
– 1st

Adobe CS5, Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet, IdN Feature Article & Subscription, Spook Mag Subscription, Pantone Colour Bridge, KeepCup

Prizes – 2nd/3rd Place

ZINE 4/circus

Hello all,

I thought you would like to see the cover of the ZINE 4/circus.
The beautiful original artwork is by Claire Gallagher and I just messed with the text.
Hmmm. Summer Edition went well.
I sold a few of my own Slow fanzines, along with the issues from Tinderbox Zine2 /In These Shoes, Zine 3/Picture Show (thank you Michelle!) and the Zine 4 (Circus).
Thank you all for participating and visiting at Summer Edition!
And.. I have learnt that next time I do need more time to do a good job of it so, no more mad, crazy deadlines coming from this corner. Just mildly crazy I hope...

Zine4

Hi all,

Sorry for the late late notice, but
the other day talking to Damo and Denise,
we thought it'd be a good idea to publish our zine nr. 4
for the Summer Edition artbook event.

The zine format: A5 in colour

Damo had the good idea of perhaps using artwork from the CIRCUS exhibition.
So I will give it a CIRCUS cover, but anything goes.
Please send 300dpi files (pdf, jpeg, tiff) to elida.maiques[at]gmail.com no later than next Wednesday June 21.
Really sorry for the stoopid deadline। I promise to be better next time.

I feel at home when the unknown surrounds me

guys, look if I dont blow my own little silver trumpet, then who, tell me who will (huh ?)
happy to report a result
This is a drawing I made for a submission call to carpaccio magazine based in Spain. The line is from a Bjork song (wanderlust) and the video is wonderful .
The theme is inspired by this line from miss Bjorks song, hence the issue will be various artists responses to same.
I see our esteemed collective member miss D. Nestors beautiful work was chosen for last months call, she is obvs much more secure than me and didnt need to tell the world :)
Anyways guys , the call for submissions is every month and it is a most imaginative publication , blog etc.
So take a look and see if it interests you .
Also , I want to propose a tinderbox drawing exhibition to be made online , ie.on our blog SOON SOON .
Simple , something inspiring , hopeful and that would bring us all together collectively.
We could put it up on a seperate flickr page or something ?
Tinderbox Top Twenty or the tinderbox heart strings collective or we are collectively moved
I know , everyone send in a line of a song that really moves them(+ a link so others can see\hear it on youtube etc)
then we can all respond to one that appeals most to us...what you think??
I hope that you are all having a good summer.(loving the new header claire of mr d. martins beautifully cut letters )

Minjae Lee

The way he uses patterns & shapes combined with figures reminds me of Klimt a bit. See more here.

Patrick Boivin

Patrick Boivin makes some cool stop motion animations using toys & action figures, like this one...

He also has directed a funny parody of Iron Man featuring his daughter which is extremely well done...

Check out more of his stuff here.

Harvey and The Vuvuzelas

See what happened on Wednesday...

Batmanomatopaiea!

Someone has put together a gallery of the sound effect images from the 60s Batman tv show that would pop up whenever they punched someone. Some of the lettering & colours are actually pretty cool!

Germaine Richier

I recently discovered Germaine Richier at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier.  I was instantly intrigued by her work and I thought her antropomorphic style would appeal to my fellow tinderboxers.

Gasiorowski

We went to this exhibition last week in Nîmes. The format of this retrospective show was non-choronological. This meant that work from Gasiorowski's hyper-realist period was hung beside paint daubed postcards of his later career. The show was really engaging and I felt I had an insight into the artist's personality.

"Throughout his career, Gérard Gasiorowski came out as an outspoken advocate of contradiction, viewed in terms of constructive opposition rather than impossibility. This is a key feature of his practice and of his personality, whereby he moves from hyperrealist figuration to abstraction or fiction, from virtuosity to the daub, while exercising irreverence or homage, gravity and the most biting irony, excess or asceticism."

If you could have any artist do a portrait of you, who would you pick?

Made me think...

new work

hi y'all
heres a little offering to the altar of melancholy and folly.
I hope you are all feeling swell and hopeful .
I saw two linnets today whilst out on my bike , and my roses are growing and I had home made sausages under an overcast sky.

New Mask

I visited a friend in Paris recently and came across a wolf mask. I thought my Billy Mask would like a friend, so I have started some paintings and drawings, here's one that is almost finished

StorySketch with live cello music by Claire Fitch - Thursday, 24 June from 8pm

You are invited to listen and draw while Wilson and Oh-Aissieux tell a selection of their best tales and the very talented Claire Fitch demonstrates her unique concept in live, improvised, electric and acoustic cello, in the cosy Victorian sitting room that is the Library Bar Extension.

This is the first time that the Narrative Arts Club will feature live music, and there can be few better ways to advance the club's commitment to innovation in Irish storytelling than to engage with an experimental demonstration of Claire's Ambiencellist sound.

For more info about Claire Fitch and her innovative approach to playing cello with new technologies, please see the Ambiencellist website:
http://www.ambiencellist.com/

This show will include a performance by The Oh-Aissieux of the first part of the Tibetan epic, Gesar of Ling, in which the dragon princess Dzeden gives birth to the shape-shifting Gesar, who takes part in a horse race to gain the throne of the kingdom of Ling. The show will also feature Scott Anthony Kelly, a performer with a powerful physical command of the stage, who will tell the story of Tuan of the Isles in his inimitable, free and lively style.

THE MAN WHO TASTED SHAPES

hello, i've missed every opportunity to post to this network, but at least it gives me a chance to invite you guys down to my first proper show. its taking place in my good friends mick and annes gallery the little ghost gallery in kilkenny, a gallery built on the idea that art exhibitions should be accessible fun engaging, and honest at the same time. i'm delighted they asked me to do a show, they make the process seem like packing for a huge trip. the two of them have endless amounts of enthusiasm and there more than happy to share.

hope some of you can make the trip down, i promise to make it worth your while!

Another Piece of Text

Finally got around to doing another one

Mark Jenkins

I like these - esp his bag animals.. kinda funny and a cool way of using your surroundings to create art... also cool is this guy.. also more out of humour than anything :) http://www.xmarkjenkinsx.com/outside.html

Fat City

Fat City by Leonard Gardner has long been one of my favorite books. I had heard John Huston adapted it into a movie, but I could never get my hands on it because it wasn't released on DVD. And the only copies of it I've seen have been VHS region 1. I'm a big fan of Huston, and I like the way he redoes books -- another example of him refashioning prose is his take on Flannery O'Connor's first novel Wise Blood-- so letting Fat City slip through my hands has always irked me. Going off this montage of the movie, I feel like I have good reason to be sad I've never seen it.

Au Revoir Claire!

I haven't posted anything either in an age so here's the farewell card I made for Claire, who has pretty much masterminded Tinderbox from the very start, she's off to France to eat cheese, read Baudelaire & say things like "I love Paris this time of year".
Only messin, we miss you already, best of luck with everything!
(please come back & organise another exhibition!)

Vincent

I've been a little out of tune with my blogging of late, so thought I should upload something! Just spent the day dismantling my bernard shaw exhibition, so here's one of the pieces :)
(sorry about the poor photo quality)
