3D felting workshop, Sat 14th , Drogheda , Co. Louth
Mantaviva [lifeblanket]
The comic has three panels where you can see a sequence of action. Most of the actions revolve around removing borders/walls and making something different with it. The panel distribution is a variation on a map of Europe, turned 90 degrees aCW. I drew the characters, Eoghan defined the colours, the black frames and half the actions. There is exchange of culture, people fishing in someone else's waters, a new country/person springing from nowhere, someone eating fruit from their neighbours' tree, a ganja closet-farm, a huge love story, and a lot more going on in Europe. My favourite is the pair who go from hachet war to coffee and chat.
work in progress.....

I made a very big (for me) drawing about A2....and then there was just too much happening on it,so I tore around the bits, now I have 3 drawings ! , these two I prefer.
There are more here
how kind of you to have the lime green ink for our titles :)

STORYTELLING: IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY
I’ve been keeping lots of stuff in my diary over the past year of images from different artists to do with certain animals, some folklore, in particular little red riding hood. I liked the idea of little red wearing wolf masks. So people wearing weird animal masks also became a tangent in work. Images of houses in woods too dominated. I’d been looking over my old landscape paintings and got to thinking what would lurk within. The woods have always been a sinister place for me, a good thing not a bad thing. As is often the cause the eureka moment came from something I was reading. A particular phrase will stand out and sure enough it will sum up better than I ever could exactly what it is I’m looking for. The title of the piece’s in the show “Half Glimpsed Things Waiting Within” came form a small piece of text by the writer Sebastian Barry describing his mother and her love of ghostly things. As they passed a hut in a desolate place she casually remarked, “that’s where they put your one”. I love that many things can be read into this and the story its self probably has many versions. The phase “half glimpsed “ just clicked. It reminded me of these houses in two tiny towns in New Zealand. They just had this weird sort of timeless feel. When it comes to writing about the evolution of work I get like an angst ridden kid who just wants to go outside and play so I'll post one of my “flow” charts as well, this will illustrate my madness as regard my thought processes. The medium was just pencil on gesso, I did not get to paint which I wanted to do but I was glad with the results and kept them as simple as possible. Billy too being a mask made an appearance. You can make up your own stories as to what they mean. (sorry images are not the best quality)

Storytelling - To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird - The Tree

These are the two pieces I submitted for the Storytelling Exhibition.
They are based on Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning book "To Kill a Mockingbird".
Jem and Scout
These are the main chacters in the book. The six-year-old tom boy Scout is the narrator of the story, which takes place over three years of the great depression in Alabama. This piece aims to show the children's imagination.
The Tree
On the top of the tree is the the house of Boo Radley, object to the children's curiosity. The first gift that Boo leaves hidden in the tree for the children; a pocket watch, is now resting on the right-hand branch. The mockingbird, ornate and plump, perches on the left, representing a beautiful innocence. A stack of books rests at the base of the tree, showing the importance of education.
Storytelling - Yorkshire myths

The Peg Powler is a hag from English folklore with a green skin, long hair and sharp teeth who is said to inhabit the River Tees. She grabs the ankles of those who wander too close to the water's edge, especially naughty children, and pulls them under water and drowns them.
Barghest, Bargtjest, Bo-guest, Bargest or Barguest is the name often given in the north of England, especially in Yorkshire, to a legendary monstrous black dog with huge teeth and claws, though in other cases the name can refer to a ghost or Household elf, especially in Northumberland and Durham (see Cauld Lad of Hylton). One is said to frequent a remote gorge named Troller's Gill. There is also a story of a Barghest entering the city of York occasionally, where, according to legend, it preys on lone travellers in the city's narrow Snickelways. Whitby is also associated with the spectre.[1] A famous Barghest was said to live near Darlington who was said to take the form of a headless man (who would vanish in flames), a headless lady, a white cat, a dog, rabbit and black dog. Another was said to live in an "uncannie-looking" dale between Darlington and Houghton, near Throstlenest[2] ..

storytelling - book of beasts

My initial idea came from the 'medieval beasteries' which were illustrated manuscripts that were based on parables about animals. There was one called 'the book of beasts' which I like the sound of. The parables were based on the behaviour of the animal, but because they had only ever heard some of these animals described they got creative with their descriptions of them. For example they thought there were such things as unicorns, dragons and sea monsters called 'sawfish'. They're full of random stuff like this: "The wolf may not bend his neck backward in no month of the year but in May alone, when it thundereth." You have to love it.
My ideas branched off a little and my illustrations became portraits of people dressing up as these animals, seeing as the animals themselves were metaphors for human behaviour. There's lots more I want to do with this whole thing but it might take a different form or style when I approach it again. I'm not quite done with it yet... yes, that means more human/animal stuff, I apologise in advance : )

Tinderbox Newsletter (PLEASE READ)
Firstly I'd like to thank everyone who took part in and helped out with the Storytelling exhibition and the zine. It was a great success! We covered our costs, got loads of positive feedback, new members, a number of sales, and some proposals for new projects...namely...
• Storydrawing. The ball is officially rolling on a project that involves live sketching/drawing/doodling. The idea is to team up with the narrative arts club and draw the storytellers in action. We're just hunting down a suitable venue at the mo. I'll publish details here when they are confirmed.
• Skill-exchange workshops. In the new year, we are planning to kick-start our skill-exchange workshops. Proposals and suggestions welcome. For the first one, I'm hoping to arrange is an art history workshop. The format will be informal. The speaker(s) discuss a topic in moderate detail and then it opens up to questions, discussion and debate. I think this could be potentially really interesting. I, myself do not have an extensive knowledge of art history, and I find it very difficult to research a certain topic without guidance. So this is some guidance for broadening your knowledge of art history or sharing your opinions in an interactive friendly environment. These sessions will be FREE and will most likely take place mid-week in the city centre. Again, specifics to be announced.
• Bang Project. Our Mask Party photographer has approached us about a fun project. It requires locations and people to participate. There will be a blog post here next week calling for participants.
• REMINDER:
I'd like to encourage you all to take part in the Some Blind Alleys Banner Competition The prize is 500BUCKS!!!! The deadline is November 10th. See the site for details, and if anybody needs technical help, ie to fit into the pixel spec, do let me know. I'm happy to help.
• Zine number 2: The collaboration issue. Due to the success and popularity of our first zine, we are hoping to get another one going as soon as possible. We hope that this new issue will have people working together or mixing up their images to create something new. Get your thinking caps on. It'll be published before the new year.
Phew. That turned out to be longer than I thought! Thanks for taking the time to read it. Don't be shy to comment here on any of the items listed. See you soon.

Maybe of interest
Hi guys, a friend of mine forwarded this email to me sounds interesting some of us may want to take part...read on and find out more....
It's coming along nicely, and we have some really great pieces from some of our city's finest artists. We're getting very excited but our doors are still open to submissions.
As the event is in Film Base, Temple Bar and we're going to have free booze the whole way, and a massive after party after the auction on the Friday the 20th, we predict alot of people are going to see the art so there is a great chance for good exposure for your work. We will also be giving our brochure (which will have jpeg, blurb and contact details of each piece and artist in it) to every cafe, restaurant, trendy pub and art gallery in Dublin, so the chance for future commssions is high too.
And on top of this your work will help us raise funds for a primary school in India and an orphanage in Cambodia. Nuff said.
If you would like to be involved, or know someone who may, please e mail us at thescoopfoundation@gmail.com
